This has been discussed couple of times before. However, there are not many cheap/small enough solutions. Here is one that is cheap and very small to fit on the base motor easily: techref.massmind.org/techref/io/sensor/pos/enc/ENC1.htmWith these encoders installed and open-dobot extended to read data from these encoders (shouldn't be too hard) you can record sequence by physically moving the arm around. Those could also indicate when the motors are stalled for calibration and other purposes.
